1. What is the name, class, and spec of your primary healer?
[A] DisRooster, priest, discipline (human - rep gains FTW)
2. What is your primary group healing environment? (i.e. raids, pvp, 5 mans)
Dungeons but raids too when I get invites.
3. What is your favourite healing spell for your class and why?
My favourite healing spell is the one that makes a player say to me afterwards "you saved my butt!".
There are a lot of spells at my disposal and none of them make me say "cool". Granted Penance has a "cool" animation but the only spell I actually say "cool" at, is Holy Fire and since patch 4.2 I can actually use it to heal players within range of the targeted baddie through the use of Atonement. A very close second would be Power Infusion. Did someone order a healing super saiyajin?
4. What healing spell do you use least for your class and why?
As of Cataclysm, Flash Heal. Flash Heal is crazy expensive now so healing with it more than 20% of the time is a fast way to empty your mana and get your team killed.
5. What do you feel is the biggest strength of your healing class and why?
Divine Aegis. Have crit, free bubble! Oh and I hope you can hold your breath seeing as you will most likely have a Divine Aegis free bubble inside my Power Word: Shield bubble. Bubbles with bubbles! Now if only I had Val'anyr for another bubble.
6. What do you feel is the biggest weakness of your healing class and why?
AoE healing. Honestly though, if discipline had more than just Prayer of Healing for AoE heals, the class would be so powerful that raids would simply stack them.
7. In a 25 man raiding environment, what do you feel, in general, is the best healing assignment for you?
Tank/single-target healing. Sure discipline can heal the raid (for a short time since our talents are not designed around AoE healing) and at the end of Wrath we were, sadly, only brought to the Lich King fight for shield spamming. Granted that was a lot of damage mitigated, but no one would ever say they enjoy their class because there is only one thing they can do. Imagine if you as a rogue were only brought to fights for your Kick. Ya sounds fun right.
8. What healing class do you enjoy healing with most and why?
This is a hard one for me since my current raiding experience as healer has yet to involve Cataclysm and when I was healing in Wrath, the healing mechanics then are almost polar opposite to what they are now. Having said that, to make a choice it would depend on the other healer. A Holy Priest is great since we have identical cooldowns in Divine Hymn and Hymn of Hope but if I knew that a restoration Druid would not need their Innervate, then I would opt for them so long as they can guarantee me that I would get their Innervate as this would allow me to cast more heals instead of conserving that blue stuff.
9. What healing class do you enjoy healing with least and why?
With my raiding experience to date, I can not say any cause me to have less enjoyment while I heal. There is an exception though. When running random dungeons, the player I dislike the most is the healer that queues as dps but does not actually have a dps spec. They really irk me.
10. What is your worst habit as a healer?
Tunnel vision. This is the number one leading cause of healer deaths due to "bad stuff" on the ground/on the player/in the area AND if it's not the "bad stuff" killing us, it's damage we take that we fail to notice to heal ourselves. After all, as a priest, Binding Heal is very powerful and should be used when A) we are gaining threat and B) when we need to heal our target and ourselves quickly. Just don't over use it since it does cost 28% of your base mana just like Flash Heal and so you can empty your blue bar REALLY fast.
11. What is your biggest pet peeve in a group environment while healing?
People ignoring the "bad stuff" and expecting me to heal them through it. I will toss a Renew on you but that's it. The rest is up to you lazy butt! This goes for both "bad stuff" on the ground/on the player/in the area and the "extra special" dps players that think they can tank baddies.
Ya you keep on running.
12. Do you feel that your class/spec is well balanced with other healers for PvE healing?
I do not claim to know everything about my class as well as all the other healing classes even though I do and can play them all. From what I have seen to date in Cataclysm, I do not see any short comings for discipline healers. If you wanted to make a check list I would guess that every item would be checked off (but I could be wrong). Single-target healing? Check. Raid healing? Check. Mitigation? Check to the power of two. Utility? Check. Mobility? Check. Cooldowns? Check. Anything else?
I think Matticus could school me some on the topic of priests and their healing balance.
13. What tools do you use to evaluate your own performance as a healer?
Did my focus'd target live? If yes, collect epics. As for the rest of you, you have bandages so quit whining!
When raiding it is almost the exact same measurement unless I knew I could have done something. Sometimes I time my cooldown activation wrong. Too early and it's full use is wasted. Too late and often the tank is now one with the floor and big mister meanie is eating everyone up.
14. What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about your healing class?
It has been so long since I came across anything that I had to Google this topic to freshen my memory. Currently, I have not been the victim of any misconceptions. In the early days of Wrath though, the number one item was "shields prevent me from getting rage/mana". This bug was officially fixed in patch 3.1 but tanks never bothered to read the patch notes (wait. read?!). As for protection paladins, they could have just used Seal of Wisdom (I would do it no matter what healer I had so that I always had mana and I could easily chain pull trash and AoE it all dead) but once patch 3.1 dropped, they did not have to worry about it.
One other misconception I use to come up against was HPS. Given that discipline mitigates a lot of damage, the overall HPS "numbers" in addons like Recount, do not reflect this.
15. What do you feel is the most difficult thing for new healers of your class to learn?
As of this writing, Cataclysm now has two patches deployed and the "new" healing paradigm has been in full effect since the launch of Cataclysm and yet, I still see healers, of all classes, spamming their fast heal (Flash Heal, Flash of Light, Healing Surge and Regrowth). Some of them even do this so much that before any fight is half over, they are OOM. While it would seem easy to say that the new healing paradigm is evident at all levels, when I was healing Wrath heroics at 80 post Cataclysm launch with both a discipline priest and a restoration druid, I had no issues spamming these fast heals. The biggest problem with these heals is they heal for a good amount. It is not their mana cost that needs to be increased, it is their healing output that needs to be reduced.
16. If someone were to try to evaluate your performance as a healer via recount, what sort of patterns would they see (i.e. lots of overhealing, low healing output, etc)?
Last I checked, for how I play discipline, low HPS unless the reviewer knew to check the "absorbs" detail.
17. Haste or Crit and why?
I have always favoured haste. Since I have a HoT via glyph for Prayer of Healing and I have Renew, more haste gives me more ticks (unless I am mistaken).
18. What healing class do you feel you understand least?
For now, shaman. My restoration shaman is only in the mid 60's at the moment and I am still sorting out my optimal healing setup. Plus, I do not have every single healing ability given that there is still another 20 levels to go. :/
19. What add-ons or macros do you use, if any, to aid you in healing?
HealBot and PowerAuras. HealBot to heal and dispell. PowerAuras to know when something is expired/ready/running out. All through Wrath, I made custom auras but now I use the actual spell icon. Easier to remember the "official" spell icon than something I randomly chose. I should not forget to mention DBM. Without it, there would be alot more of me dying and less healing. "Run away little girl. Run away."
20. Do you strive primarily for balance between your healing stats, or do you stack some much higher than others, and why?
Intellect is king in Cataclysm followed by the prince, Spirit. WIthout intellect, you have less mana, less regen and less spell power. Without lots of spirit, you have less time to heal before hitting empty. The really odd thing is, early in Wrath I discovered spirit and by stacking it I noticed my regen was awesome. Then about mid way through Wrath, blizzard said "no one uses spirit so we are getting rid of it". Needless to say, they were shortsighted. Did you hear? Spirit is "in" again.
So who is next. Well it looks like this thing is really making the rounds but if these few have not done it yet, let us see what you got.
Priest, Holy : Oestrus
Priest, Holy : Matticus
Priest : Kaleri
Yes, I know they are all priests but two of them know the Holy specialization more than me so I am interested in that a lot since Holy is my off-spec. I will say this though, if anyone knows an active restoration shaman, please tag them for this and let me know. That is the one healer I have yet to read about. I have already read Beruthiel's post and Kurn's post but I still have the following posts to read since I started my own post (sheesh some of you sure can type fast!) Jasyla's post, Shintar's post, Vidyala's post and Fannon's post.
Twitter links for the above players : Oestrus, Matticus, Kaleri, Beruthiel, Kurn, Jasyla, Vidyala, Fannon
